December 12 – Body Integration. This year, when did you feel the most integrated with your body? Did you have a moment where there wasn’t mind and body, but simply a cohesive YOU, alive and present? (Author: Patrick Reynolds)
When I zeroed in on the time that applied most to the Body Integration prompt, it shocked me. It ended up being an activity I never in a million years would have guessed I’d be doing this year if I had to predict the future 11 months ago.
Not only that, but even as I prepared to participate, I figured I’d be too focused on how bad I was to actually accomplish anything. In truth, I really sucked, but I haven’t had so much fun with a heart-rate-raising activity since playing soccer 20 years ago - and I was equally bad at that.
So, what’s the mystery activity?
It was a great time for a great cause and during our two games, I had several moments where I forgot about my physical limitations and just did what I had to do. I ran as fast as I could without thinking about it. I battled for the puck without regard for my safety (and I still have bruises almost two months later). I immersed myself in the pure joy of playing for the sheer thrill of playing. We tried to compete, despite knowing we were no match for the teams we went up against. But it didn’t even matter. It wasn’t about winning or losing or how we played the game. It was about playing at all. Because three months before that day, I wouldn’t have done it at all.
I can’t wait to do it all again next year!
